Project Description:
- The original house was a dark 1960’s ranch with low ceilings. The goal of the renovation was to completely reinvent the home using its midcentury roots as inspiration. We started with the footprint of the house and expanded or removed sections to take better advantage of the lot. The front entrance stayed in the same location but now opens directly onto the two-story living room. The old three-bedroom wing became the new master suite and the kitchen was expanded for views and access to the back yard. To create space for a family we added a second floor with three bedrooms, three baths and a play loft. The second floor is tucked discretely into a roof that has wide overhangs, which create strong shadow lines reminiscent of midcentury design. We also added a basement under part of the home for a media room, guest room and mechanicals.
Project Details:
The basic footprint of the house remained the same. We kept most of the original foundation but expanded ceiling heights from 7’-10” on the old first floor to 9’-0” on the new first and second floors.
The double height living room and kitchen are open to each other to become the main gathering space of the house. They are light filled and open to the back yard as well as the kids’s second floor play loft.
To flood the interior with light, we used oversized casement windows in a clad black finish as another nod to midcentury design. The casement’s slim frame maximizes the amount of glass in each sash and provides full ventilation when opened.
