Olentangy

Project Description:

  • Originally built in the 1950’s, this home had been altered over the decades, resulting in a maze of disconnected rooms and windowless spaces. The kitchen was isolated, cut off from the living room and any connection to the outdoors. The renovation set out to restore clarity and purpose to the plan—opening the kitchen to the living room and reorienting views toward the ravine beyond. The primary suite was reimagined with a new entry foyer to create a buffer from the living spaces, along with a skylit bathroom and walk-in closet. Underutilized interior areas were repurposed into a walk-in pantry and a first-floor laundry, bringing light, order, and function back to the heart of the home.

Project Details:

We removed the cased opening between the kitchen and living room, installing a new flush beam to carry the old back wall and roof load of the original house so that the ceiling in the kitchen would flow seamlessly into the living space.

The kitchen was reorganized for a larger island, better work and counter space as well as direct access to a new walk-in pantry.  The old remote storage closet by the garage was repurposed into a new mudroom.

Trim and cabinets were designed to coordinate with the original woodwork in the house to maintain the mid-century feel.
